We are delighted to introduce the add-on course 'Jyotirvijnanam: Exploring Ancient Indian Astronomy', offered by the Department of Sanskrit at Sree Sankara College Kalady. This course is designed to provide students with a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of ancient Indian astronomy, also known as 'Jyotisha' or 'Jyotirvidya.' By studying this ancient discipline, students will not only gain valuable insights into the astronomical knowledge of ancient India but also contribute to the vision of the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) mission outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Course Overview:
'Jyotirvijnanam' is a 30-hour add-on course that seeks to explore the rich heritage of Indian astronomy. Through a carefully curated curriculum, students will embark on a journey to understand the profound connections between astronomy, mathematics, culture, and philosophy in ancient India. The course will be conducted in a blended format, combining online and offline modes.
Key Objectives:
Explore Ancient Indian Astronomy: Students will be introduced to the foundational texts, such as the Vedas, Aryabhatiya, Surya Siddhanta, and others, to understand the development of astronomy in ancient India. They will learn about early celestial observations, timekeeping methods, and planetary motion.
Comprehend Mathematical Foundations: The course will delve into the mathematical principles used by ancient Indian astronomers in their calculations. Concepts of trigonometry and algebra relevant to astronomical calculations will be explored.
Understand Cosmology and Philosophy: Students will gain insights into the cosmological theories proposed by ancient Indian astronomers and their philosophical implications. They will explore how astronomy was intertwined with religious beliefs and cultural practices.
Examine Cross-Cultural Influences: The course will examine the interactions between Indian astronomy and other ancient civilizations, such as Greek, Persian, and Chinese. Students will analyse the exchange of knowledge and the influence of Indian astronomical ideas on the global stage.
