International Webinar on

Department of Biochemistry, Sree Sankara College, Kalady is organizing an International Webinar on “Use of patch-clamp electrophysiology to study ion channels” on 16 February 2022.. The resource person of the webinar is Dr. Tharaka Wijerathne, Postdoctoral Research Associate from Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, California, United States.

Ion channels are specialized proteins in the plasma membrane that provide a passageway through which charged ions can cross the plasma membrane down their electrochemical gradient. The resulting ionic current, generated by the movement of charged ions through membrane channels, can be measured by patch-clamp methods. The method can also be explored to study physiological, pharmacological and biophysical properties of ion channels. Many physiological functions such as including flow of nerve impulses, muscle contraction, cell division, hormone secretion, immune responses, etc are directly influenced by ion channels. Body response to the external stimuli can be linked to the regulation of ion channel activity. Understanding the working of ion channels in detail using the patch clamp technique will spotlight on the scope of targeting these channels to develop new treatment strategies in near future
