Department Profile
The Department of English at Sree Sankara College is a postgraduate department with eleven faculty members, out of which six are Ph.D. holders. The department was recognized as a Research Center by Mahatma Gandhi University in 2019 and it has three research guides and seventeen research scholars. A student-centered approach is followed by the eleven-member faculty of whom three members have more than twenty years of teaching experience.
Special stress is given to communicative language learning, providing ample scope to hone the language skills of students. We intend for our students to have a deeper understanding of literature and culture, and also help them develop their critical thinking skills and care is taken to foster an ethical value system that will ensure character molding.
The faculty is committed to providing students with a high-quality education that will prepare them for careers in a variety of fields. A number of student support services like remedial coaching, counselling for prospective careers and mentoring are provided.
The department offers a variety of courses at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, including, Women's Writing, Literary Criticism and Theory, Cultural Studies, Linguistics, and Post Colonial Poetry. Through various courses offered by the department the students understand the complex issues surrounding human rights, nationalism, gender and the environment, and are encouraged to think critically about how they can make a difference.
