The Department of Biotechnology, Sree Sankara College, Kalady, conducted a hands-on training programme on mushroom cultivation under its flagship initiative, MycoBio – Scientifically Cultivated, Sustainably Produced. Designed as an annual entrepreneurship programme, MycoBio provides second-year Biotechnology students with practical training in mushroom cultivation while fostering innovation, teamwork, and entrepreneurial skills.
The programme, led by Dr. Amrutha Chacko, combined theoretical and practical sessions on mushroom biology, spawn production, bed preparation using sawdust, cultivation techniques, harvesting, and sustainable organic production methods. Students gained hands-on experience in the complete cultivation process and learned the commercial potential of mushroom farming.
A unique feature of the initiative is that students actively cultivate, harvest, and market the mushrooms produced in the department. This experiential learning approach provides valuable exposure to entrepreneurship, product marketing, and income generation while enhancing technical and managerial skills.
Through MycoBio, the Department of Biotechnology promotes sustainable practices, skill development, and self-employment opportunities, empowering students with practical knowledge beyond the classroom.
