Whether we know it or not, microbes are an essential part of everyday life. From health to food, to the environment, microbes have a role and we highlight and celebrate that on International Microorganism Day on 17 September each year.
17 September is International Microorganism Day, an annual celebration of microbiology. It was established by the Portuguese Society for Microbiology but has quickly become adopted worldwide and is now observed by UNESCO. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of microbiology among young people and society in general. This day is an opportunity to promote the diversity and variety of microorganisms.
On September 26, 2023, the Department of Microbiology organized a Quiz Competition on the occasion of International Microorganism Day, focused on bringing out the strength, passion and interest of students about microbes and creating more awareness towards the microbes. The Aim of the event is to share and exchange knowledge about microbes and their importance in living systems and thus promote microbial literacy.
7 teams of 2 students each participated in this quiz competition to make it a grand success. Out of 7 teams, Team Jenner– Mr.Marzook and Mr. Mahidar of First-year Microbiology are announced as winners of this quiz competition. The second prize was won by Anjaly and Abhinsha of Second-year Microbiology and the Third prize was by Aparna P and Sandra Sabu of Third-year Microbiology class. Each of these winners received a cash prize from Ms. Sujayalakshmi K.V, Dr Renjusha Menon & Ms. Jeena Susan and they congratulated all winners and all the participants for their contribution and encouraged the students to continue participating in such future activities
