The biodiversity study tour of the batch 2021 – 2023 and 2022 – 2024 was on 11th – 12th of January 2023 to Shendruney Wildlife Sanctuary & Thenmala EcoTourism spot, Shankili Myristica Swamp, the southern part of Kerala, Kollam District. Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the Western Ghats, comes under the control of Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve.
The Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a treasure house of plant diversity. About more than thousand species of flowering plants belonging to more than 150 families are reported from this sanctuary of which 309 species are endemic to Western Ghats. Birds species including migratory, endemic and endangered species have been reported in this wildlife sanctuary.
Tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest cover a major area of the sanctuary. It has a presence of lion-tailed macaque, a highly endangered species. A brood of the highly elusive nocturnal forest birds. Thenmala eco-tourism is the first planned Eco tourist spot in India.
The visit to these sensitive places gives the students the auspicious opportunity to experience the filed oriented studies and sampling methods implementing in forest study and safe guarding our rich and fragile ecosystems. From the department of Environment Science and Management 37 students and 2 faculties visited the spot.
